Leaders in sports law, betting and integrity gathered last Friday to preview the oral argument in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Christie vs. National Collegiate Athletic Association, and to examine the key issues in this landmark case from the perspective of several of the case participants. The event included Matt McGill, who will be arguing the case on behalf of the State of New Jersey. The event also examined the future of legal sports betting in the U.S. from both a regulatory and operational perspective and took place in Washington, DC at the National Press Club in front of gathered members of the media and related-industries.
Sports Law, Betting and Integrity leaders convene to preview Supreme Court Showdown. Thought leaders weigh in on Christie vs. NCAA (which in January will shift to Murphy vs. NCAA)
Key commentators at the event also included Elbert Lin of Hunton and Williams, Daniel Wallach of Becker & Poliakoff, Michael Pollock of Spectrum Gaming Group, Jake Williams of Sportradar, Andrew Brandt of Villanova Sports Law, Daniel Shapiro of William Hill.
Key quotes from commentators included:
Elbert Lin: “The reason why the court has taken this case is the underlying federal issue and federal government regulation.”
Matthew McGill: “We, on behalf of New Jersey, are asking the court to evaluate the entirety of PASPA and we do so on the ground that once you recognize PASPA is unconstitutional, that is the heart and soul of this effort.”
Jake Williams: “No matter how the sports betting landscape evolves, or indeed stays the same, protecting integrity will remain a key focus. In this regard, monitoring and detecting betting related manipulation of sporting events has developed significantly and is one of the most powerful tools to protect the integrity of sports. The ability to do so is greatly enhanced within an open and properly regulated betting environment. We here at Sportradar are positioned effectively to support in this regard as we currently provide services to 70+ partners across 17 sports around the world.”
Dan Wallach: “Any rollout of sports betting must include a mobile and online component right away. That will ensure not only maximum revenues and tax benefits for states, but will better safeguard sport integrity by reallocating a greater percentage of the wagering handle from illegal markets to legal and regulated markets. If sports betting is confined to racetracks and casinos, probably less than fifty percent of the illegal market will be captured.”
Earlier this month, Sportradar hosted “The Future of Sports Gambling in the U.S.”, at the Russell Senate Building on Capitol Hill. The event convened government officials, legal professionals, and sports industry experts to discuss the impact the Supreme Court’s decision on Christie vs. NCAA will have on the sports landscape, with a particular focus on sporting integrity. Here are some key quotes from that event from industry and Sportradar experts in the sports gambling & integrity space:
Ted Leonsis, Revolution: “This culture is in the underground and we must now bring it into the light… There is an inevitability here that we will move forward with gambling being part of the overall sports landscape.”
On Sportradar’s Integrity Services: Andreas Krannich – Managing Director Integrity Services, Sportradar: “Credible integrity partners such as Sportradar with real case studies will be the difference in the US between clarity and confusion. It is crucial to understand that in order to prevent match fixing you need to monitor globally.”
