For as much as MMA fans appreciate the incredible skill level and dedication of UFC champions like Georges St. Pierre and Jose Aldo, there has never been an equal substitute for size. As the old saying goes, “bigger is better”, and it’s about to get a whole lot bigger with UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos putting his title on the line against No. 1 contender Frank Mir at UFC 146: Santos vs. Mir this Saturday back home at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the stain of Alistair Overeem’s positive drug test still lingers in the buildup towards the next big UFC event, an absolutely stacked main card featuring five-straight heavyweight bouts should be exciting enough to make betting online fans forget about what has gone down over the past few months in a hurry.
The card will begin with the freakish Stefan Struve looking to establish some consistency in the biggest MMA promotion of them all as he battles Laver Johnson in the first of five heavyweight contests. The 24-year old has strung together consecutive wins, and with so much experience under his belt already, and his considerable size advantage over nearly every opponent that he faces at 6’11’, his long-term potential is still very impressive. Johnson has already recorded two knockout wins in 2012, and while a third is unlikely, his resume is impressive enough that fans are looking very forward to this fight.
While the next fight lacks the sportsbook name brand recognition of some of the others on the card, Strikeforce fans are very familiar with the likes of Shane del Rosario and Stipe Miocic, who will look to establish themselves on a new platform after competing on the Strikeforce: Challengers cards. Both fighters are undefeated, with just one match between the two of them actually going the distance. This has all of the makings of an explosive Fight of the Night candidate, and could be the beginning of something great for at least one of the two.
Next up is Roy “Big Country” Nelson taking on Dave Herman, and while Nelson’s gig is risking expiration, what would a main card made up completely of heavyweight fights b without Big Country in it? At just 27-years old, Herman will be anxious to prove his merit after losing to Struve, and we won’t expect him to fall short. Another massive collision between former champion Cain Valasquez and Antonio Silva will finish paving the way for the main event, solidifying a betting card that really has no holes.
Dos Santos vs. Mir may not have the same appeal that Dos Santos vs. Overeem did, but the fact is that Overeem did not deserve the title shot in the first place after using banned substances. It is hard to doubt now that Overeem used before his tilt with former champion Brock Lesnar, and at least Mir presents us with a viable contender that we can believe is clean. Both Dos Santos and Mir pack a considerable punch and are very talented technically, so while we don’t expect a sports betting upset here, it won’t be a major surprise at the end of what should be an excellent fight night in the UFC.
