INTERESTING MOBILE FACTS IN NEW STUDY

Unitys Q2-2016 survey looked at data from over 4.4 billion installed apps.

The latest Q2-2016 study Global Games by the Numbers from Unity on mobile use has a number of interesting facts, including a claim that 82 percent of all mobile games are installed on Android devices, while 17 percent are installed on iOS devices.

The survey looked at data from over 4.4 billion installed Unity-made apps on devices across the world, and reveals that there are more installs on Android devices than iOS in every global market aside from Japan, where 53 percent of games are installed on iOS devices.

Among iOS devices used, the older models appear to be more popular, with the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 making up a combined 28 percent of iOS game installs, while the 6s and 6s Plus make up only 15 percent.

On the Android side, Samsung devices account for 35 percent of all game downloads, which is almost triple the amount of downloads that its two main competitors, Xiaomi and Huawei, have combined.

Brazil, Russia, India and China accounted for four of the top five global game install leaders with 41 percent of the total and 42 percent of Android. Four of the top five Android mobile device manufacturers for BRIC countries are from China.

Android achieved near total dominance in Indonesia, with 96 percent of total game installs, surpassing the Republic of Korea and Brazil (Q1 2016 leaders, each with 92 percent).

Marshmallow (6.0 or later), released in October of 2015, gained significant traction over the last quarter, leapfrogging past 4.5X with 7.5 percent of installs globally.

iOS showed more consolidation with 78 percent (vs 72 percent in Q1) of installs occurring on devices running iOS 9.0 (released September 2015) or later.
