Phil Hellmuth A Look Back at My Tenth WSOP Win
6/15/10 - The 2010 World Series of Poker is in full swing and I'm in Vegas hunting for my record-breaking twelfth championship bracelet.
I can't help but think back to 2006 when I won my tenth WSOP title by defeating 1,600 other players in the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em tournament with rebuys.
I'd fought hard in the WSOP that year. I'd made it into the money six times already and reached three final tables, including a second place finish. That surprised many in the poker world who thought that I'd never come close to winning another title.
Well, never count out Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
So, anyway, on the way to my tenth title, I caught a huge break at the final table to win the following pot.
With the blinds at $8,000/$16,000, I called with Kd-5d. The flop came Kh-Qd-9h. A player named Elio Cabrera checked, Finnish pro Juha Helppi bet $45,000, and I made it $145,000 to go.
Elio moved all-in instantly while Juha studied for awhile before folding.
Now, I knew Elio had a tendency to play wild and crazy poker. I really thought that my top pair could beat any drawing hand that he might have, like Qh-10h or something similar. Plus, it was only $135,000 more to call a pot that was already worth over $500,000, so I made the call.
Ugh, Elio showed J-10 for a made straight. I could only win with perfect-perfect on the next two cards.
Truthfully, I had already resigned myself to losing that pot, even when the 2d came on the turn to give me a flush draw. Then, boom, there it was, the 7d on the river. I made my diamond flush for a big $650,000 win!
Another key hand came up later when Juha raised it up to $90,000 to go and I moved all-in for $480,000 more with pocket fives.
Juha made the call with Ah-6d, and, for the first time in two days, I was in an all-in coin flip for the win.
The flop came Kd-Jd-5d. I flopped trips but Juha had a diamond flush draw.
The turn card was the Qd and Juha made his flush. I swear, he must have jumped three feet into the air. Still, I knew that I had ten outs to win -- three kings, three queens, three jacks, and one five.
Yes, the river was the Qh! I scooped the $1.2 million pot with a full house.
About ten hands later, with the blinds at $15,000/$30,000, I raised it up to $80,000 to go with pocket kings. Juha took some time to study the situation. Then, somewhat surprisingly, he announced that he was all-in.
Now it was my turn to jump out of my seat. I instantly called, tabling my cowboys.
Juha raised it over $1 million more with A-10 so the pot was now worth more than $2.2 million. The WSOP bracelet would be his if he won this pot as he had me covered.
Sorry, Juha, this day belonged to me. My pocket kings held up with the final board reading Q-8-2-2-7.
Veteran pro player Mike Matusow hugged me as the crowd cheered but I didn't move a muscle. It was too early to celebrate because Juha still had $290,000 in chips remaining.
Soon after, though, I picked up A-J against Juha's A-9. I limped from the button and he moved all-in.
Once again, I jumped out of my seat and made the call. When the final board showed Q-8-3-K-6, I'd won my tenth WSOP bracelet and the first place prize of $630,000.
