Nick Rainey, Poker Pro, Scams Investors
Sunday September 18,2011 : Has Rainey done a runner?
The publication of a new and accusatory poker site, Nick Rainey is a Thief.com, by a person or persons unknown this week had industry observers clicking over to the respected twoplustwo forum to find out what was going on.
And, if true, a sad tale it turned out to be.
The issue has its genesis in the World Series of Poker tournaments earlier this year, where American live and online poker pro Nick Rainey offered the prospect of sharing in his winnings in this year's main event to 'investors' prepared to stake him for the 2011 competition, using the online poker forums to spread the word.
Although hardly a top player judging by his career stats, Rainey had enjoyed a moderate placing in the 2010 event and a few other live tourney wins, and this apparently persuaded some investors to gamble on his capability, contributing thousands of dollars to his buy-in.
But, it is alleged, Rainey was economical with the truth, first telling his investors that he had been eliminated from the main event early and without success, and then shutting down his social networking and email communication channels when it transpired that he did not even enter the competition.
Compounding the hurt, it is claimed that Rainey then took off for parts of Canada unknown.
And there the situation seems to rest, with investors complaining bitterly that they have not been given back their money and Rainey still - apparently -. somewhere in the Great White North.
The prospects for redress do not look good. The new website claims that after initially stalling his investors with excuses on non-payment, Rainey has now ceased to communicate at all.
