Opposition to federal regulation opens the way for individual states to legalise.
Fiery New Jersey state Senator Ray Lesniak has applauded the recent decision of the Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid to oppose federal legislation of online gambling, correlating it with his issues with Harrah’s Entertainment and his preference for regulation and taxing at state level.
The PolitickerNJ reports that Lesniak authored an email this week criticising Harrah’s and punting intra-state rather than federal legalisation.
"Harrah's, despite its huge campaign contributions to the Republican Governor's Association and hiring of Governor Christie's campaign manager Michael DuHaime, has run out of luck," Lesniak declared. "Its effort to legalize Internet gaming at the federal level and prevent states from taxing its revenues has been declared dead by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
"New Jersey can now move ahead with my legislation S490 to legalize intrastate internet gaming which can produce sufficient revenues to maintain purse subsidies to make our horse racing industry vibrant (reminder: $1 billion+ revenues, 13,000 jobs) and secure much needed revenues for our struggling Atlantic City casinos without interference. The Christie administration no longer has an excuse to bow at the Temple of Harrah's."
Senator Reid’s staff recently issued a statement noting that: "Senator Reid has long had concerns about Internet gaming. He does not support any of the existing bills and he would oppose any proposal that would put jobs in Nevada at risk."
