The buzz around Pokerstars' 85 billionth hand drives improvement

An independent online poker monitor reports that last week's traffic showed a welcome upward trend of 6.5 percent, albeit mainly from the buzz around the imminent event of Pokerstars' 85 billionth hand.

Half of the top ten sites showed traffic gains, and on Pokerstars player numbers grew 17 percent as the milestone hand excitement built amid extensive promotions. The company's blog reported that there were a quarter of a million players active when the big hand landed.

Pokerscout reports that Playtech's iPoker network appears to be solidifying its lead over Party Poker, and now boasts 20 percent more traffic.

Revolution - the merged Lock Poker and Cake Poker network - did well and moved into the eighth top spot, delivering a year-on-year growth of 51 percent.

Overall, online poker traffic has declined 14 percent year-on-year with the three industry leaders all showing declining traffic: Pokerstars (-7 percent) iPoker Networki (-33 percent) and Party Poker (-42 percent).

GTechG2's International Poker Network continued to languish (-53 percent) along with IGT Poker - formerly Entraction (-49 percent; Everest Poker (-34 percent); PKR (-31 percent); Merge (-18 percent); and Ongame (-20 percent).

Winning Poker Network (formerly Yatahay) continued to surge and was up 200 percent.
