Massachusetts Attorney General Says Daily Fantasy Sports Are Legal

Thursday October 8,2015 :  DAILY FANTASY SPORTS IS LEGAL, SAYS BOSTON A.G. (Update)

Attorney General Maura Healey gives DraftKings a clean bill of legal health.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who InfoPowa readers will recall has been reviewing the legality of DFS in her state, gave the daily fantasy sports business a fillip Wednesday when she told the Boston Globe that she’s not pursuing any criminal inquiries into Boston-based DraftKings Inc.

The AG has had the company under review since late September, and commented on her conclusions in a week which has found the company subjected to massive mainstream media coverage over an employee who released sensitive information and later collected $350,000 in winnings at the rival FanDuel site.

Healey said that there are no federal or state laws that prohibit daily fantasy sports sites from operating; “We’re not looking to shut them down,” she said.

The AG went on to concede that the revelations this week about potential insider trading are “concerning.”

“I think that those who play want to be, and expect to be, assured a level playing field,” Healey said. “I think it’s important to me that that is in place.”

Healey revealed that she has reached out to both DraftKings and FanDuel and invited them to her office to talk about steps the websites are taking to protect consumers.
