Political parties critical of Deputy Ministers plans

Dutch MP's have threatened to block proposed legalization for gambling expansion in the Netherlands unless Deputy Justice Minister Fred Teeven takes decisive and proactive action to combat gambling addiction.

Political parties Green Left, the Christian Union, the Socialist Party and the Labour Party are critical of Teeven's plan to lift restrictions on the gambling market, including legalising internet gambling, with concern over insufficient measures to combat addiction, said a report by Radio Netherlands.

Deputy Minister Teeven intends establishing a new gambling watchdog organisation which MP's believe will not have enough real power.

It is Teeven’s intention that the Dutch gambling market, currently monopolised by The Holland Casino, open up  by introducing competition.

The matter will be debated in parliament today (Wednesday) according to the report.
