Italian data protection regulator announces compliance investigation

ITALIAN ONLINE GAMBLING OPERATORS TO BE INCLUDED IN PRIVACY ENQUIRY

Italian data protection regulator announces compliance investigation.

The Italian data privacy protection regulator has announced that online gambling operators will be included in its enquiry this year to ensure that companies comply with the relevant legalization, according to a report in the publication Gaming Techlaw.

Every six months the regulator selects a specific sector to be investigated as part of its compliance campaign, often using complaints from the public as a guide when making its selection.

Gaming Techlaw reports that the Italian privacy authorities are among the most diligent and active in the European Union, and recently hit Google with a Euro 1 million fine regarding a privacy breach that occurred through the Street View service.

"The timing of such investigation could not be better since operators might take this opportunity to start working on measures to be adopted in view of the upcoming EU Privacy Regulation that will considerably increase the applicable fines," Gaming Techlaw observes.
