Supreme Court in Italy says poker is game of skill

Saturday March 16,2013 : ITALIAN SUPREME COURT SAYS POKER IS A GAME OF SKILL

Case has its roots in a police raid on poker club back in 2009

The Supreme Court in Italy has confirmed its finding that tournament poker is a game of skill, effectively removing the game from the internationally accepted definition of gambling under certain circumstances.

The poker information site Pokerfuse reports that the Supreme Court ruling has its roots in charges brought against the Double Up Club in Sicily back in 2009.

Subsequent legal submissions to the Palermo Court of Liberty resulted in a finding by the court that tournament poker confined to Texas Hold'Em with no rebuys was a game in which the skill of the players was the determining factor.

The court also ruled that the lack of any regulatory framework at the time did not make holding such tournaments illegal.

The Supreme Court upheld the lower court's findings.
