Oculus unveils $99 Gear VR with Netflix, Facebook and Twitch Support.

The virtual reality (VR) possibilities flowing from wearable computer hardware have been under development by leading online gambling providers like Playtech and Microgaming for some time  but Facebook subsidiary Oculus is among the first to market with another commercial product this week.

The company has been working closely with Korean smartphone giant Samsung, and this week Peter Koo of that company told delegates at the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference in the USA that a $99 GearVR headset will be ready for the holiday shopping season this year.

Koo, who is VP for Mobile at Samsung, said that the product will be compatible with all of Samsung’s Gear products, including the Note 5, S6 Edge+, S6, S6 Edge….and it will be available to ship on Black Friday.

Earlier this year Oculus announced that its heavy-duty proprietary Rift VR headset, designed to work with computers for a more comprehensive VR experience, will launch in 2016, but the Samsung partnership appears to have produced a more versatile, economical and lightweight product designed for mobile.

Content on the Oculus-Samsung product will include access to Netflix and Oculus Video, along with the new Facebook 360 degree videos. And live streamer Twitch will also be supported on the device.

The publication TNW reports that Oculus GearVR and Rift will have access to the Oculus Platform in order to involve third party developers.
