Pennsylvania Looking at Online Gambling

Saturday November 10, 2012 :  PENNSYLVANIA CONSIDERS ONLINE GAMBLING

Lottery expansion to online fact finding endeavour

The Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett's administration has made clear its interest in Pennsylvania online gambling in conjunction with the gradual management privatisation of the Department of Revenue-run Pennsylvania Lottery.

In a statement released Friday which formed an update on talks with unidentified companies on its controversial lottery privatisation plan, Corbett's administration said ideas relating to online gambling were "on the table".

The privatisation strategy has met with opposition from both Pennysylvania's largest workers union and, on a political level, the Democrat's who are questioning the need to look at privatisation when State employees are capable of handling the job.  Proceeds from the Pennsylvania lottery's past fiscal year fattened State coffers by $ 1 Billion and delivered a growth of 8.5 percent.

The Corbett administration's investigation into privatisation would only be seriously considered if "the State could guarantee itself more money", said Corbett.  "If we can ensure increased funding and protect our seniors who are the recipients of the lottery … then we have our obligation to take a look at privatizing."
