Thursday February 28,2013 : THURSDAY A BIG DAY FOR IOWA AND ONLINE GAMBLING

State Senate sub-committee to decide fate of SSB 1068

Our readers may recall the move in Iowa through State Study Bill 1068 to legalise intrastate online poker if provided from existing licensed land casinos; Thursday 28 February is the crunch day for the bill, which will be considered today by a state senate sub-committee.

It's the second attempt to legalise online poker in the state, the first having failed in the House last year, although it managed to survive the Senate.

A number of industry experts have speculated that the now fast-moving legalization scene in Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey could influence Iowa lawmakers to follow suit, but a poll commissioned by the Des Moines Register newspaper recently may trigger counter-sentiments.

The poll, conducted by Selzer & Co. of West Des Moines, comprised 802 Iowa adults interviewed February 3-6, and showed that nearly three-quarters of Iowans surveyed said they opposed legalization, and are in no hurry to gamble at their home computers.
