Swedish gambling monopoly invests $400,000 in Lund University research.

Sweden's gambling monopoly Svenska Spel has invested $400,000 in responsible gambling research, funding a chair in gambling at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine.

Lennart Käll, the company's chief executive, said that more knowledge on gambling will assist the formation of responsible gambling strategies and help protect players.

The Lund University chair includes a professorship, and will focus on research regarding preventive measures to reduce the risk of problem gambling; the new initiative will be operational by the end of summer, a university spokesman said.

Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, says that there has not been enough research into gambling addiction:

"Therefore, we need to learn more about this specific area and it is particularly pleasing that Lund University has been awarded this unique mission," she said.
