Swedish Gambling ads being cracked down on

Wednesday July 9,2014 : SCANDINAVIAN CLAMPDOWN ON GAMBLING ADVERTS?

Review of Swedish gambling advertising could have far-reaching implications in the Nordic region.

Gambling adverts in Swedish publications that are widely read or seen in neighbouring Nordic nations wishing to shield their populations from such incentives to gamble are an increasing source of concern, and the Swedish government is taking steps to address the situation.

The government has tasked the SPER (the country's Council on Gaming Ethics) with an independent review of gambling advertising content and activity in Swedish publications. The review will include the monitoring of all broadcast and publication channels involved in carrying gambling advertisements from both licensed and unlicensed operators accessing the local markets.

The use of Swedish media by operators who are not licensed will be a priority in the review, along with recommendations on how these intrusions can be halted, possibly by the formation of an advertising standards body.
