The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been listed as one of five major sporting events "on the decline".

According to the Washington Times, re-runs of old episodes "have killed ESPN Classic, so it's only a matter of time partypokerbefore it jumps the shark on ESPN as well".

Other sporting occasions mentioned by the publication include US horse racing's Triple Crown, the Tour de France, the NFL Pro Bowl and the FedEx Cup.

The newspaper's comments may be surprising to some, as the WSOP broke numerous records this year for attendance and prize money.

Its main event boasts the second biggest jackpot in the history of tournament poker at more than $9 million, which is up significantly on the total from 2007.

Changes were made to the schedule this year meaning that the final table of the main event will take place in November.
