SCIENTIFIC GAMES SUBSIDIARY INCURS SOFTWARE FINES

3/25/10 – Middlesex-based Global Draw Limited, a subsidiary of the Scientific Games group which recently partnered with Playtech plc in Internet and other gambling ventures, was in hot water with the Business Software Alliance this week….and it proved to be an expensive encounter.

The anti-software piracy body launched legal action against the gaming firm for failing to purchase a sufficient number of Microsoft software licenses.

Global Draw Ltd was fined GBP 20 000 by the BSA and ordered to purchase GBP 25 000 worth of legal Microsoft software for compliance purposes.

BSA head Michala Wardell said firms need to understand that failing to comply with licensing requirements can have dire financial consequences.

She added: “Disregarding intellectual property laws to chase cost savings in the short-term will always lead to more harm than good. In the current economic climate, businesses cannot afford unnecessary risks which could far exceed the initial outlay of licensed software.”
