TERRESTRIAL CASINOS FOR CYPRUS

Wednesday October 12, 2011 : About turn in views on gambling venues by Mediterranean island's Parliament
 
An apparent policy shift has seen the Cypriot Government, well known for its antipathy to online gambling, in an abrupt turn around this week where the Government now appears to be moving towards licenced land casinos on the Mediterranean island.
 
A report in today's (Wednesday) Cyprus-Mail reveals that there is strong support for the idea of licenced casinos on the island from members of Parliament, tourism and gaming industries.
 
In an address to the House Commerce Committee, Cypriot Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias said: "Many among us would probably never enter such establishments during our lifetime, but this does not mean that we should not respond to the needs of the age, taking into consideration the public interest” and "Cyprus cannot turn its back on a sector that could bring much needed revenues to the State coffers."
 
Kazamias revealed that the Government "will very soon table a specific proposal before Parliament regarding the operation of casinos."
 
Famagusta Tourism Coordinating Committee marketing officer, Lakis Avramides said: “It had to be done a long time ago. It’s never too late and we hope it will be realised soon, of course the Famagusta district will claim an operating licence for a casino to help the seasonality of the district.”
 
Island observers are speculating that a former terminal building at Larnaca airport may have been earmarked as a possible casino location.
 
Future developments will be keenly followed and although unlikely, perhaps the Cypriot Government will consider similar action on the topic of internet gambling.
