01/11/2012 : ICANN WILL ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FOR .ANYTHING FROM TOMORROW

Big brands expected to be first in application line

The internet naming association, who play a large role in the expansion and evolution of the internet, "Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" (ICANN) will open the application window for a new generic top-level domain program tomorrow, with the application period due to run initially from Thursday, 12 January 2012 to April 12, 2012.

Today, just 22 gTLDs exist — .com, .org and .info are a few examples — plus about 250 country-level domains like .uk or .cn.  After the change, potentially thousands of new gTLDs are expected to come into existence based on words and brand names such as .toyota or .apple.

ICANN chief Rod Beckstrom said the new internet naming system will unleash the global human imagination and respects the rights of groups to create new top level domains in any language or script.
