900 Free Arcade Games Released

Tuesday November 4,2014 : ARCADE GAMES FOR FREE

900 browser-based games made available over the Internet…but some have iffy controls.

Internet Arcade has made 900 arcade games available for free over the Internet as it continues to build its online library of video and console games as part of the JavaScript Mess project, the goal of which is to emulate video game systems to be played in a web browser.

Internet Arcade claims:

"The game collection ranges from early ‘bronze-age' video games, with black and white screens and simple sounds, through to large-scale games containing digitized voices, images and music."

Pages give the visitor a little history of the game and a description of how to play, but Jason Scott, a developer who worked on this part of the JSMESS project, recently wrote in a blog post that some of the games might be a buggy in places.

"Of the roughly 900 arcade games up there, some are in pretty weird shape – vector games are an issue, scaling is broken for some, and some have control mechanisms that are just not going to translate to a keyboard or even a joy-pad," he warns.

The respected publication TechCrunch confirms that, pointing out:

"The 5 key lets you insert a coin; the 1 key is usually the Player 1 start button. Arrows are usually used for directional stuff, with CTRL/ALT/SPACE used for the three primary buttons. Beyond that, you’ll have to mash buttons a bit to figure it out (or hit TAB to dive into the key configurations)."
