TOP HIGH STAKES POKER PLAYER MADE $4.9 MILL IN 2010

Posted 1/4/11 : Authoritative monitoring site names Daniel Cates as top earner

The name Daniel ‘Jungleman' Cates seems to be on everyone's lips lately as he cuts a swathe through the online high stakes poker sector with consistently disciplined but audacious play.  The respected monitoring website High Stakes DB.com has named him highest earner for 2010 in the internet high stakes milieu, revealing that this young player has amassed some $4.9 million over the twelve months.

It's no mean feat for a 20-year-old who was largely unknown in January 2010 and who has faced the best of them online, including big names like Dwan and Ivey, to win $1.1 million in Pot Limit Omaha and $3.8 million in NLHE.

In fact, but for the vagaries of the game, Cates could have finished even better – as late as December 8 his profit peaked at an incredible $5.3 million.

Cates nevertheless finished the year comfortably ahead of nearest rival, Andreas "skjervoy" Tobergsen – another relatively unfamiliar player who recorded 85 percent of his wins on the virtual PLO tables. Tobergsen ended the year up $3.7 million, just ahead of Tom Dwan on $3.6 million and Phil Ivey on $3 million.

The biggest fluctuations appear to be those of Dwan – hardly surprising, given his penchant for daring and verve. In the third week of April he peaked at $7.1 million, but lost some $4.3 million over the next eight or so weeks and never regained the ground above the $5 million mark. Ivey was more consistent and conservative, reaching the apex of his earnings at $3.9 million in mid-December but slipping as the year closed.

High Stakes DB.com is worth a visit to check out the largest online pots of the year, headed by Patrik Antonius vs. Cadillac1944 in a split pot of $638 000.
