The UK-based 3D online poker operator PKR.com is set to soft launch its new 2D PKR Lite poker client this week in a move that could ultimately make an entry into a legalised US online poker market easier.

The company's chief operating officer Leon Walters says that PKR Lite will hopefully keep players interested, and bring back inactive customers, but that there are also strategic possibilities in a commercial sense in providing a 2D option for future agreements with licensees who may be in a legalised US market in addition to that in Europe.
PKR Lite has the advantages of improved download speed and smaller memory consumption, encouraging more visitors to become active players, and therefore increasing its appeal to potential licensees. The product downloads at the same time as the original client and uses a shared player-base.
Walters revealed this week that players have a choice when downloading PKR's standard 3D download product, switching to the faster downloading PKR Lite, or letting the full 3D download complete whilst they use PKR Lite.
If the full download is allowed to complete the player will find two shortcuts on the desktop, giving a choice between 2D (Lite) and 3D. Cosmetically, the PKR Lite product lacks animated avatars and offers only a ‘helicopter' perspective of the action.
Players using the Lite version will be able to play on the same tables as their 3D counterparts in order to build player liquidity.
Walters hopes to gather in players who lost interest in the standard 3D product due to the download interval.
He revealed that the company was seeing a drop-off in interest once the download went past the ten minute mark due to either low-end hardware or weak and miserly broadband facilities. PKR Lite would enable this category of player to quickly download and start playing whilst the heavier 3D version was still downloading…or the player could abandon the 3D download altogether and continue on the 2D version.
PKR clearly has an eye on US developments, having recently increased its US profile through its status as a founder member of the US Online Gaming Association (USOGA) set up in January this year. Download Pkr Lite here.
