Gambling Review Commission report delayed

With online gamblers still smarting from the decision by a South African court which has disrupted internet casino activities in the country , there has been more bad news this week.

Local media report that the Gambling Review Commission set up to examine South African gambling in general and make recommendations on online betting has now been delayed by at least two weeks.

The Commission’s report, which the industry hopes will at last release liberalising legalization that has been before parliament for some time, was due for submission at the end of August, but this week the South African Department of Trade and Industry policy and legalization director, Nomfundo Maseti, commented:  “It’s safe to say that [the report] will be ready in about two weeks.”

Maseti confirmed that the commission was “looking at the industry holistically, including casinos, online gambling and horse racing, so as to do a comprehensive review.”
