South African Sports Betting Association

12/22/2011 : LADBROKES SUGGESTS A SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS BETTING ASSOCIATION

Trade association could promote best practices and standardisation.

The South African office of betting group Ladbrokes has suggested that a trade association of gambling groups operating legitimately in the South African online gambling market should be established to promote best practices and standardisation.

Speaking to IOL Business News, Ladbrokes SA marketing manager Anli Kotze said: “Sports betting is relatively new to the South African market and although it is a highly regulated industry, an industry association will establish collaboration between licensed operators, regulators and our customers.”

Such an association would also provide the industry with a unified voice on industry and regulatory issues, she added.

“SA's online sports betting market is currently worth about Rands 660 million and is expected to grow to about Rands 800 million over the next two years. Unlicensed online sites operating illegally within SA are currently costing the government millions in lost tax revenue and are affecting the potential growth of legal online operators,” Kotze claimed.

Her company entered the South Afrcian online sports betting market in August this year under a licence from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board.
