UK GAMBLING COMMISSION PUBLISHES 2009-2010 INDUSTRY STATS

Statistics based on regulatory returns completed by operators

The report includes facts and figures for 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010 on activity in the arcade, betting, bingo, casino and lotteries sectors plus data on gaming machines.  The statistics are based on regulatory returns completed by operators and comparative figures for the 2008/09 financial year are included in the report. The Commission also announced that it is publishing its standard six-monthly supplement on betting integrity activity.

Key Points in the Remote Gambling Sector:

–           Operators licensed by the Commission at 31 March 2010 had risen 18 percent to 432 (March 2009: 366).  The increase is largely due to society lotteries obtaining remote operating licences (up 92 percent).

–           The British remote market has continued to record growth but the market, as regulated by the Commission, has recorded reductions in Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) (- 11 percent), in number of employees within the sector (-3 percent), in the number of active accounts (-21 percent) and in the number of new player registrations (-14 percent).  However, the amount wagered on remote gambling (excluding betting exchanges as Commission does not obtain turnover data), has increased, as has the value of funds held in player accounts (2 percent).
