PROPOSAL TO BAN MASSACHUSETTS INTERNET CAFE GAMBLING

Robert DeLeo, the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Assembly, appears to have a selective approach to gambling. The Democratic Party politician supports land casinos and racetrack slots, but this week filed legalization that seeks to ban cyber cafes from selling internet time or phone cards that allow customers to play online slots and other internet games.
 
Customers can win points redeemable for cash, but the state's Attorney General's Office says these businesses do not post odds or guarantee payouts.
 
Violators of the proposed ban could face 15 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines for every machine so used.
 
The law would not apply to internet activity regarding the state lottery, betting on horse races, or charitable gaming.
