New study by research firm Gartner

The independent research organisation Gartner Inc has unveiled its recent study of the mobile market, noting that the Android platform is the one to watch, with the potential to command 50 percent of the market by 2012.

The study heralds the end of Apple's i-dominance over the global apps market as Gartner predicts that Android will continue to expand, eventually defeating Apple, which will peak at 20 percent of the market.

Another up-and-coming platform,  that of Windows Mobile, will command a 20 percent share of the market in the next few years, leaving Blackberry with around 10 percent.

Android's success is attributed to its availability on a wider range of mobiles and tablets.

Smart phone sales will reach 468 million units by the end of 2011, the Gartner survey predicts.
