PokerStars may be about to exit the Australian market

Monday June 13, 2011 : Unconfirmed report that online poker giant may have to rethink Australian presence

The online poker information site Quadjacks is currently carrying an unconfirmed report that PokerStars may be about to exit the Australian market following growing US pressure on the Australian authorities to investigate the poker giant's GP Information Services subsidiary and its activities.

Pokerstars has not so far responded to the allegations.

Under the heading "First Black Friday for American, Now Black Sunday for Australia" the report claims that Pokerstars will exit "the Australian market" with effect from August 1st 2011.

The report originally came from a Twitter post by one Chris Levick, who did not source his information.

Last month, widespread reports in the Australian media claimed that US enforcement bodies had been urging Australian counterparts to investigate the activities of GP Information Services, an Australian support company based in New South Wales that is allegedly a subsidiary of Pokerstars.

According to local press reports last month, the Australian federal government has been advised by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) to “…start charging poker websites blatantly getting around Australian legalization, by outlawing their services. The ACC sees online poker and the unregulated movement of funds as having the potential for “money laundering and revenue and taxation fraud.”
