State Internet Information Office will oversee online content
The Chinese Government announced in a statement from its State Council General Office that it will be formulating a department to manage Internet information.
The department will be known as the State Internet Information Office (SIIO) and will oversee and supervise online content and approvals of businesses related to online news reporting, a Xinhua report identifies.
The SIIO will have broad range and responsibility to control:
–  The development of online gaming, online video and online publication industries.
–  Promoting the construction of major news websites and managing government online publicity work.
–  Investigate and punish websites violating laws and regulations.
–  Oversee telecom service providers in their efforts to improve the management of registration of domain names, distribution of IP addresses, registration of websites and Internet access.
Four senior officials have been appointed by the State Council to develop and run the new department.
