Posted 3/18/11 : Is Google about to rev up the social networking sector?

Despite denials from Google, the Texas techie expo South by Southwest Interactive was abuzz with rumours Thursday that the search engine giant plans to use the show as a launch platform for a new social networking service dubbed "Circles."

The whispers include assertions that the new service will offer photo, video and status message sharing, and that it has been largely developed by Chris Messina, the co-creator of successful social and software products online like BarCamp and Hashtags. Messina has so far refused to comment on the rumours one way or the other.

According to readwriteweb.com, Messina is not the only techie heavyweight involved in the Circle project; the publication claims that Jonathan Sposato, chief executive of the photo editing service Piknik and founder of Google Gadgets, has also been working on the project.
